CFC: Sometimes it's alright to pass the buck

22 September 2015

From Mass Communication Specialist Seaman

L. A. Preston

Sailors aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) have the opportunity to donate to local, national and international non-profit organizations through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC).
The CFC mission is to promote and
support charity through a program that
provides federal employees the opportunity
to improve the quality of life for all.
Truman has set a goal to reach $75,000
in donations from its Sailors. The annual
fundraiser runs through Dec. 15.

Lt. A. C. Urech, the ship's lead CFC
coordinator, said Sailors can donate
through the CFC link on Truman's intranet
page or MyPay.

"The great thing about being on the
carrier is the amount of Sailors we have
onboard," said Urech. "If every Sailor
donated $5 a month, that's $60 a year
per Sailor; multiply that by 3,000 and a
total of $180,000 will have been donated.
One small contribution can have a
major impact."

If Internet is unavailable, Sailors can
complete a form with their departmental
CFC representative.

"A lot of us joined the Navy to serve
others and serve our country," said Urech.
"This is just another way to give back to
the community to those who are less
fortunate. It is a nice way to honor
the military."

Sailors can elect to donate to multiple
charitable organizations including those
that concentrate on cures for diseases,
environmental protection, relief for families
in need of counseling, access to water
in third world countries and meals for
hungry children.

Senior Chief Information Systems
Technician K. K. Ayo, the ship's assistant
CFC coordinator, said she has personal
reasons, which inspire her to donate
every year.

"I was misdiagnosed with Leukemia when
I was a child," said Ayo. "It is important for
me to give back to child cancer research
organizations to support the children and
families who are less fortunate."

For more information about how to
donate, contact your departmental CFC
representative, visit the CFC website www.
cfcshr.org, or reference the CFC book on
the intranet.
