Commander, Task Group 56.3 Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG) assumed command of the expeditionary fuel farm from the mobilized Navy Reserve individual augmentees (IA) in Bahrain, Oct. 15.

The transition to NAVELSG provides important fueling capability for the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

"This is a 24/7 mission 365 days a year, and we are ready to provide support that is required," said Lt. Cmdr. Mark Kuntze, OIC, CTG 56.3.1. "I think it's vital for the Central Command's forces in theater."

The fuel farm was initially operated by Air Force personnel. This mission was transitioned to aviation boatswain's mate (fuel) IAs from the Navy Reserve who performed well, despite never having worked together.

"The Reserve IA's did a tremendous job improving fuel farm operations. We hope to continue their good work and take the fuel farm operations to the next level," said Cmdr. Jimmy Toal, Task Group 56.3 and Commander Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group Forward. "Our Navy Cargo Handling Battalions are trained in expeditionary fuel farm operations and handling. In addition, we have surge capabilities if the situation requires."

"We are a cohesive and tenured team of well-qualified mobilized reservists." said Kuntze. "The average time in our company is eight years, and they have an average of 15 years of experience in the Navy. We conduct our training throughout the year as a group. This allows us to learn everyone's strengths ensuring mission success."

NAVELSG executes expeditionary logistics for Commander Task Force 56. They are responsible for intra-theater movement control, air cargo handling, and logistical planning for operations and exercises with expeditionary fuel operations.
