Sailors aboard aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) hosted a ceremony in support of the 2015 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) on the ship's mess decks Nov. 12.

The CFC was founded by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 and is one of the only notable charity organizations the military is affiliated with directly. The campaign allows the military, federal and civilian workforce to contribute to general charities distributed nationwide and/or local charities.

"It's important to me because charities that contribute to cancer research have saved the lives of my family," said Chief Aviation Support Equipment Technician Daphne Guzman. "I'm a mother of two and children who have no parents get food and water through our donations."

The kickoff ceremony consisted of a presentation and the history of CFC, a cake cutting and karaoke.

"CFC is important because a little bit goes a long way," said Guzman. "There are thousands of charities that you can help by just donating a simple dollar a week."

Sailors interested can contact their divisional CFC representatives in order to learn how to donate and what charities they can donate to.

Washington is deployed as part of Southern Seas 2015 which seeks to enhance interoperability, increase regional stability and build and maintain relationships with countries throughout the region through joint, multinational and interagency exchanges and cooperation.
