It's a warm day in December but Naval Base San Diego's (NBSD's) Fleet and Family Readiness and Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) teams have worked some magic, bringing snow to the base's recreation center for the 12th annual holiday party held Dec. 6.
It's a warm day in December but Naval Base San Diego's (NBSD's) Fleet and Family Readiness and Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) teams have worked some magic, bringing snow to the base's recreation center for the 12th annual holiday party held Dec. 6.

"It's great seeing the kids experience snow, especially when it's their first time," said Mary Kirby, the NBSD Fleet and Family Readiness Director. "When they initially touch it they aren't sure what to expect, and after about five seconds it's like they have been playing with it their entire lives."

Over the years, the festival has grown in attendance from 500 people to more than 6,000 military families. Visitors to this free event enjoy refreshments, crafts, games, and activities, including an opportunity to meet Santa Claus.

"This is a very impressive event," said Air Force Capt. Scott Hollister, who recently transferred with his family from Denver, Colorado to San Diego. "We miss the snow, so that initially brought us out but my favorite aspect of this entire party is the camaraderie experienced by all the attendees. It's important to recognize that we can come together and support one another during the hard times and also celebrate together during the good times."

A great deal of planning is involved to ensure that this event is a success; preparations begin six months in advance to guarantee that a pleasant and safe environment is created for adults and children alike.
