Navy Region Singapore (NRS) Moral, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) fitness specialists and command fitness leaders (CFL) are helping Sailors to stay physically fit in Singapore this summer.
Navy Region Singapore (NRS) Moral, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) fitness specialists and command fitness leaders (CFL) are helping Sailors to stay physically fit in Singapore this summer.

Sailors use several tools the CFLs offer through command physical training (PT), paired with NRS' Navy Fitness Program to stay fit and healthy.

"We have class group exercises, monthly fun runs, our Admiral's cup and many other options to keep our Sailors engaged in fitness," said Michelle Bryan, fitness director at NRS Fleet Fitness Center. "We also provide a wide selection of facilities ranging from hot to cold gyms and various courts for different sports."

Navy CFLs and fitness specialists help personnel improve overall fitness and healthy lifestyles by using a variety of physical training methods including strength training, endurance training, and nutrition education.

"As a command fitness leader, I feel that I am responsible for every Sailor's health and welfare," said Legalman 1st Class James Goza, NRS head CFL. "Aside from the command physical training that we facilitate weekly, the Navy Region Singapore Fleet Fitness Center provides personnel that are certified to teach group exercises. They also have a nutrition specialist to help out with dieting guidance."

NRS Sailors have command PT every Tuesday and Thursday to help them stay fit. The NRS fleet fitness center also implements kickboxing, spin classes, golf programs, tennis courts, basketball courts and others to ensure Sailors stay at the peak of physical readiness. The NRS Fleet Fitness Center is planning to use a kiosk that will have several exercise classes pre-programmed so it can project any class during hours of operation.

"Our MWR team is doing everything possible to provide quality facilities and activities for all personnel to ensure that the community is fit and healthy," said Bryan. "We are also staying active by coordinating with the head CFL regularly to help give ideas for command PT as well as helping to lead classes during the session."

The physical readiness program is designed to ensure the health and readiness of U.S. Navy personnel on ship and shore. Personnel that fail to remain in standards are placed on a fitness enhancement program (FEP) to assist them in getting back in standards.

"We try to keep our workouts as diverse as possible and we try to take in suggestions from our Sailors to help improve our system to ensure that everyone continues to stay fit and within standards," said Goza.

Established in 2007, NRCS provides administrative support to U.S. commands in Singapore and to visiting U.S., allied and partner navies. It also manages 165 family and bachelor housing units and dozens of command, administrative and warehouse facilities to support the operational readiness of active duty military personnel and their families.
