Sailor assigned to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron Four Eight (HSM 48) Tests Positive for COVID-19

On March 18, a Sailor assigned to the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 48 tested positive for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). HSM-48 is located at Naval Station Mayport.

MAYPORT Fla. (March 18, 2020) – On March 18, a Sailor assigned to the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 48 tested positive for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). HSM-48 is located at Naval Station Mayport.

The Sailor is currently isolated at their off-base residence and restricted in movement in accordance with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines.

Military health professionals are in the process of conducting a thorough contact investigation to determine whether any other personnel may have been in close contact and possibly exposed. At this time there is no indication the Sailor had contact with any other members of the squadron however, depending on the results of that investigation, additional precautionary measures may be taken.

U.S. Navy Squadrons conduct routine, daily cleanliness procedures geared toward health, wellness and the prevention of communicable disease spread.

The Navy is committed to taking every measure possible to protect the health of our force. We remain in close coordination with state and federal authorities, and public health authorities to ensure the well-being of our personnel and local population.
