Commander Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific will conduct a virtual commemoration ceremony on Friday, June 5th to mark the 78th anniversary of the Battle of Midway.
The virtual ceremony will be made available via live streaming over the Navy Region Hawaii Facebook or Twitter page from 9:00 – 9:30 am. The event is closed to the public in order to maintain COVID-19-related social distancing requirements.
The ceremony will be held in the vicinity of the Lone Sailor Statue on the grounds of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Visitor Center and will feature music by the Pacific Fleet Band as well as remarks by Admiral John Aquilino, Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet and Rear Admiral Robert Chadwick, Commander, Navy Region Hawaii. A wreath presentation will be included to honor all those who fought and won the Battle of Midway 78 years ago this week.
The Battle of Midway, a pivotal engagement in the Pacific Theater of World War II, occurred six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. From June 3-7, 1942, the U.S. Navy decisively defeated an attacking fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy near Midway Atoll, and turned the tide of the war in the Pacific.
