The Honorable Williams visited Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PSNY) in Kittery, Maine, Aug. 24, where he formally presented PSNY’s production resource officer, Capt. William Schultz, with the FY19 Chief of Naval Operations Safety Award (Large Industrial Facility). Williams also toured the shipyard's power plant, recognizing the shipyard workers who prioritize safety throughout the day.

"From power plants to Public Private Venture (PPV) housing, safety for our sailors and their families is one of my top priorities," said Williams. "Through seemingly small steps of courage, sailors who value safety may come forward and save lives, reduce lost work days and damaged equipment. Thank you for all you do."

Williams traveled to Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn. Aug. 25 where he focused on submarine fleet readiness and continued to honor Sailors who are taking steps to enhance the Navy's operational safety environment.

"The safe, high caliber training instills confidence that won’t let complacency set in. There is no margin for failure in the submarine community, and they pave the path for success," said Williams. "Witnessing the capability of the Navy's submarine force firsthand provides me with great comfort in light of the great power competition we face."

He traveled to Naval Station Newport in Newport, R.I. Aug. 26. Williams evaluated the conditions of the Installation and met with key community partners alongside the installation's new commanding officer, Capt. James McIver.

"In Newport, I see opportunities for ship location expansion," said Williams. "I am really proud of our sailors and the ship repair workers for their great work and look forward to supporting our installations to get more ships back to the fleet."

The Honorable Williams traveled with minimal staff, and all travelers followed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. All passed medical screenings at each location to ensure mission safety.
