As final preparations are made, media are invited to view the process and discuss recovery operations with leaders and subject matter experts from the DOH, EPA, and the Navy. In accordance with the Interagency Drinking Water System Team-approved Red Hill Shaft Recovery and Monitoring Plan, and the DOH issuance of a general discharge permit, an eight-tank granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration system was installed near the Red Hill Well. This system is capable of filtering up to 5 million gallons of water per day and will ensure water being discharged into Halawa Stream meets standards set by the DOH, EPA, and the Clean Water Act. GAC filtration is a proven technology used to remove organic chemicals, such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, from water. GAC filters are made from materials high in carbon, such as walnut shells, wood or peat. Due to limited space and COVID considerations, we are limited to two people per organization. If you plan to attend, please RSVP with the Joint Information Center Media Engagement Team. Email Ensign Martin Carey, martin.l.carey.mil@us.navy.mil, or call 808-471-5013 by 9:00 a.m. Jan. 28. Plan to meet on location at 12:30 p.m. Upon RSVP, the Joint Information Center will provide location details. The event will be open for video, audio, and print coverage. All personnel are required to wear slacks and closed-toed shoes due to environmental conditions – no skirts, dresses, heels, or sandals.
