The USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98) visited Algiers on a port visit this week. The three-day visit demonstrated the ongoing friendship and security cooperation between the U.S. and Algeria, building off prior port visit stopovers in Algiers and Oran in 2023 by the USNS Trenton (T-EPF 5).
During the visit, Algerian naval officers and officials enjoyed a reception on board the ship, the Algerian Navy hosted U.S. sailors in a friendly soccer match, and U.S. crew enjoyed touristic sites in Algiers and Tipaza.
“This visit reinforces the commitment to working alongside partners in Algeria to promote ongoing diplomatic efforts which will advance peace and security in the region," said Cmdr. Andrew Darjany, commanding officer of the Forrest Sherman. "The professionalism and dedication of our sailors were on full display during this visit, and we are proud to represent the United States Navy."
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to our colleagues in the Algerian government for hosting the Forrest Sherman, and to the ship’s crew for being here with us,” said Ambassador Elizabeth Moore Aubin. “I believe the possibilities for American-Algerian naval cooperation are nearly limitless. Thank you for coming together to show the friendship and mutual respect between our forces and our people.”
The USS Forrest Sherman is the U.S. Navy's 48th Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer and was named in honor of Adm. Forrest Sherman, the 12th Chief of U.S. Naval Operations.
The ship is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.
The U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners to advance U.S. national interests, security, and stability in Europe and Africa.
