The "Biggest Little City in the World," Reno, Nevada, is scheduled to host members of the U.S. Navy during Reno/Carson City Navy Week, Jun. 18-24, a week-long series of community outreach events designed to showcase the Navy the nation needs.

During Reno/Carson City Navy Week, Mr. Les Hubbard, Command Information Officer (CIO) for the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), will meet with corporate, civic, education and government leaders to increase awareness of the Navy, its mission and the importance of the Navy to the people of Reno.

Reno residents will have many opportunities to meet Sailors from USS Constitution, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1, and the state's namesake, USS Nevada (SSBN 733).

There will also be live performances by the Navy Band at various locations throughout the week, including Mills Park, McFadden Plaza and Sparks Farmer's Market. They will also perform the national anthem before the Reno Aces baseball game Jun. 18.

"Navy Weeks give us the opportunity to go to cities that do not have significant Navy presence and talk to people about why their Navy is important," said Lt. j.g. Davis Anderson, the lead planner for Reno/Carson City Navy Week. "We are really excited to come to Reno and show area residents what we do."

Historically, Navy Week events draw thousands of attendees to participate and create a dialogue between Sailors and local residents. The events are designed to raise awareness about the Navy.

"We are bringing Sailors from all over the country who work in different jobs to really give residents a sense of the many different aspects of the Navy," said Anderson.

The events and special programs that will take place throughout Reno are the culmination of planning and preparation over many months by the Navy Office of Community Outreach and Reno community leaders.

The U.S. Navy Parachute Team, "the Leap Frogs," is scheduled to jump at the Reno Rodeo.

"We are excited to be working with the Navy during Reno Navy Week," said George Combs, the general manager for the Reno Rodeo. "It is an honor to show them a signature Reno event, and to learn about the Navy at the same time."

Reno/Carson City Navy Week is the sixth of 14 Navy Weeks in 2018 that focuses a variety of assets, equipment, and personnel on a single city for a week-long series of engagements designed to bring America's Navy closer to the people it protects.
