Sailors assigned to the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) departed Salalah, Oman after a port visit May 7.
During the port visit, Sailors had the opportunity to explore the city and attend tours highlighting historic landmarks and location to experience Omani culture and tradition
“During the tour I got to experience more culture and tradition than I ever could have imagined,” said Chief Intelligence Specialist Matthew Thigpen, a Sailor who participated in a tour during the port visit. “We got to pet camels in the desert and got a taste of some of the delicious food that Oman has to offer.”
“The Gonzalez crew really enjoyed their time in Salalah” said Cmdr. Christopher Schwarz, the commanding officer of Gonzalez. “Oman has such a wonderful culture and our Sailors can’t wait to experience it again.”
Gonzalez is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
