On May 24, Vice Adm. John B. Nowell, Jr. became the 59th Chief of Naval Personnel (CNP) when he assumed duties from Vice Adm. Robert Burke.

Nowell received the oath of office from Commander, Naval Service Training Command, Rear Adm. Milton J. Sands, in Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall at Recruit Training Command prior to serving as the reviewing official for recruit graduation onboard Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois.

“It is an honor and a privilege to receive this responsibility,” said Nowell. “I look forward to the challenge of being the Navy’s new chief of naval personnel and carrying on the work of modernizing the personnel side of the Navy to ensure we have the Navy our Nation Needs.”

Nowell relieved Burke as the Navy's top personnel officer following Senate confirmation.

“John Nowell is a great leader,” said Burke.  “Having served as director of Military Personnel, Plans and Policies, he understands the needs of our Sailors and families, and is the perfect person to continue serving our Navy as the Chief of Naval Personnel.”
Burke, who served as CNP from May 2016 to May 2019, will relieve Adm. Bill Moran as the 40th vice chief of naval operations.

The chief of naval personnel serves concurrently as the deputy chief of naval operations (Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education) (N1) and is responsible for the planning and programming of all manpower, personnel, training and education resources for the U.S. Navy.
