11 June 2019
Adm. Robert Burke became the 40th Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) when he assumed duties from Adm. Bill Moran on Monday, June 10.

Editors Note - On July 7th, 2019, Adm. Bill Moran withdrew as the 32nd chief of naval operations and will retire from active service.  On July 18, 2019, VADM Mike Gilday was nominated by the President for promotion to admiral and will assume the duties pending his confirmation.

Adm. Robert Burke became the 40th Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) when he assumed duties from Adm. Bill Moran on Monday, June 10.

Burke was promoted to the rank of admiral by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson prior to the change of office.

"It is an honor and a privilege for me to assume this responsibility,” Burke said. “I look forward to continuing to serve our Sailors as the vice chief of naval operations.”

In his previous position, Burke served as Navy's 58th chief of naval personnel from May 2016 to May 2019. He was responsible for the planning and programming of all manpower, personnel, training and education resources for the U.S. Navy.

"ADM Bob Burke brings a tremendous wealth of operational and personnel expertise to the job as the next Vice Chief of Naval Operations," Richardson said. "His work in 6th Fleet helped prepare our Navy for resurgent Russia. Most recently, as Chief of Naval Personnel, Bob's been a strong champion for our Sailors -- opening up new opportunities and putting more and more power in the hands of our Sailors. I look forward to serving with him at this new and important level."

Moran, who served as VCNO from May 2016 to June 2019, is scheduled to relieve Adm. John Richardson as the Chief of Naval Operations.
