Laurie A. Varner, Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point’s (NHCCP) material management assistant department head, was recently selected as the 2018 Bureau of Medicine and Surgery’s Civilian Medical Logistician of the Year.
“Laurie has faithfully served with the material management team and kept that department running smoothly for five years,” said NHCCP commanding officer Capt. Douglas Stephens. “Navy medicine logisticians do a tremendous job planning, obtaining and maintaining the required equipment, consumables and services for the effective and efficient delivery of healthcare support throughout the Navy and Marine Corps. Laurie is the epitome of professionalism and we are fortunate to have her at NHCCP.”
“It is truly an honor to be selected to represent such an incredible group of professionals,” Varner said. “My staff of nine Sailors and eight civilians are the people who deserve the credit. The team’s dedication to ensuring mission accomplishment in accordance with strict policies and procedures are second to none.”
Varner was recognized for her leadership and management ability, technical expertise, organizational support and responsiveness, material and cost savings, procedural enhancements and contributions to audit readiness efforts.

Additionally, under her leadership, NHCCP Material Management Department was recognized by Bureau of Medicine and Surgery as Navy Medicine East’s Fiscal Year 2018 top performer in logistics metrics. She also led her team in the procurement of $12.4 million dollars in supplies, equipment, and contract obligations for all 26 command departments and supported MCAS Cherry Point entities.
