The US Navy is bringing the city of Duluth, Minnesota and surrounding areas a glimpse of the mission and experiences of the nation's sea service, July 15-21.
Sailors from commands across the country, including a senior Navy executive, are coming to Duluth to share their experiences with the Zenith City.
“I am very excited to return to Minnesota,” said Jodi Greene, Deputy Under Secretary of the Navy and Northfield, Minnesota native. “I love to connect with the people in this great state and tell them about why the Navy is so important to our national defense and everyday lives. It’s a message that we need to talk about more, and I am happy to do so in Duluth.”
Scheduled events include community service projects featuring Sailors from Pre-Commissioning Unit Minneapolis/St. Paul (LCS 21) and Navy Band Great Lakes performances. The week will conclude with the precision maneuvers and tactical demonstrations by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels at the Duluth Aviation Expo.
“Our mission is to tell as many people in the city of Duluth why their Navy is important,” said Lt. Davis Anderson, Duluth Navy Week lead planner. “We are happy to come to the shores of Lake Superior and show residents the different types of jobs and missions the Navy carries out on a daily basis across the world.”
The week kicks off with Sailors receiving the Navy Week Proclamation from the Duluth City Council Monday.
The Navy Band Great Lakes will be performing live throughout the city at events ranging from the Duluth Huskies baseball game to local schools.
"The band is excited to be one of the many units coming to Duluth for Navy Week," said Lt. Pat Hill, director, Navy Band Great Lakes. "We have a great schedule lined up to showcase Navy Music to Duluth residents. We look forward to sharing our talents, professionalism, and patriotism, and partnering with our shipmates to get to know the citizens of Duluth."
Duluth Navy Week is one of only 14 Navy Weeks scheduled throughout 2019. Navy weeks are designed to increase awareness and show communities the investment they have made in their Navy and increase awareness in cities that do not have a significant Navy presence.
