USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) held a Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) Fund Drive kickoff event on the ship's mess decks, Feb. 21.

In attendance was Truman Commanding Officer Capt. Nicholas Dienna, Executive Officer Capt. Cassidy Norman and Command Master Chief Jonas Carter - all making contributions to the NMCRS during the event.

"We are getting ready to get into the most difficult, challenging and arduous portion of our training cycle, and I am here to talk about the [NMRCS] because it is that important," said Dienna. "This program exists to help Sailors, and it absolutely helps Sailors."

NMCRS is a non-profit organization founded in 1904 that provides financial assistance, interest-free loans, educational scholarships and other support to Navy and Marine families.

Each year, the local NMCRS from the Hampton Roads Fleet and Family Services Office organizes a fund-drive from March through April. Over the last two years this team has raised more than $3 million.

"It's a very critical fundraising drive created for Sailors and Marines, with the funds predominately coming from Sailors and Marines," said Truman's NMCRS fund-drive coordinator Senior Chief Machinist's Mate David Hickman. "I don't think people understand how much assistance they actually provide to our shipmates."

Since 2016 Truman Sailors have contributed more than $130,000 to the NMRCS.

"We want to help provide that soap box for the mission statement of the NMCRS, and help our Sailors better understand the importance of the drive and how it comes back to reflect on ourselves and our shipmates," said Hickman.

Truman is underway conducting its composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX). COMPTUEX is the final stage of pre-deployment workups for the strike group. For USS Harry S. Truman, the evolution caps off more than seven months of training to ensure the ship and crew are ready to deploy.
