The physical security manager at Naval Submarine School (NSS) was recognized as the first quarter Civilian of the Quarter (COQ) at an awards ceremony, Feb. 26.

Joseph Diedrich holds the position of both physical security manager and classified material control officer at NSS and coordinates routine contractor visits, as well as high-level visits from foreign dignitaries and legislative leaders.

Diedrich said the most rewarding part of his job is assisting staff and students and helping make a critical, and often unfamiliar, security process less complicated and intimidating for users. He expressed appreciation for being selected as the COQ.

"I think programs like this are important and motivate the staff, who can see their efforts are recognized and valued by the people for whom we work," said Diedrich.

NSS trains officer and enlisted Sailors in basic knowledge and skills the submarine commands in the Atlantic and Pacific build upon to develop competence and proficiency in the operation and maintenance of submarines and their systems, and provides functional, refresher, advanced, and team training to increase and maintain knowledge and proficiency in undersea warfare skills.

The Submarine Learning Center creates, coordinates and executes the future training and education vision for the Submarine Force. It is accountable for all undersea curriculum, training delivery methodologies, and for developing and maintaining professional development continuum for all undersea warfare officers and ratings to include electronics technician (communications and navigation), fire control technician, sonar technician, machinist's mate (auxiliary and weapons), missile technician, and all nuclear training ratings.
