Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Massiel Collado Ortiz was selected as the Navy's 2017 American Correctional Association (ACA) Military Corrections Committee (MCC) Corrections Professional of the Year (CPOY).

Collado Ortiz works as a Correctional Specialist, assigned to Navy Consolidated Brig Miramar Pearl Harbor Detachment (NCBM PH Det.), serving as the Brig Duty Officer and Training Chief at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

The CPOY award is granted to a Correctional Specialist E-6 and below stationed at any of the Navy Shore Brigs who strives for excellence in their duties.

Lt. Cmdr. Robert Winters, Naval Brig Pearl Harbor officer in charge, praised Collado Oritz for her drive and commitment to her many duties.

"The example she displays with an absolutely relentless work ethic and boundless dedication sets the bar for excellence for all others in the command," said Winters. "Her examples from the deck-plate certainly had a positive effect on our team."

The ACA sets the national standards for correctional facilities, which are used to ensure that all facilities and staff are operating safely, effectively and professionally.

Collado Ortiz's efforts have kept NCBM PH Det. at 100 percent compliance with ACA standards and she is directly responsible for the 98 percent professional certification rate of her team.

"It's unquestionably an honor to represent NCBM Pearl Harbor Det. It certainly validates all the extra hours put in. Ultimately it's great to feel like I am making my family, mentors and command proud," said Collado Ortiz.

The MCC is slated to officially recognize Collado Ortiz's achievements during the ACA 148th Congress of Correction in Minneapolis in August.
