The Submarine Learning Center (SLC) recognized Shawn Katz as the 2017 Civilian of the Year (COY) March 9.
The Submarine Learning Center (SLC) recognized Shawn Katz as the 2017 Civilian of the Year (COY) March 9.

Katz is the facilities manager, learning standards officer, and assistant contracting officer representative for SLC Det. San Diego. He supports the instructional staff in providing secure and renovated training spaces required to train non-nuclear enlisted and officer submarine Sailors.

An SLC staff member since 2016, Katz is also the Maintenance and Material Management (3M) coordinator for the SLC domain.

Without the direct support from the command leadership team and the rest of the SLC Det. San Diego staff, this award wouldn't be coming to San Diego," said Katz. "Recognition programs like this are important because they afford commands the opportunity to highlight team members who go above and beyond. Of course, I'm proud of this award, but I believe it also recognizes the high level of training our detachment provides to the fleet. We may be small, but we are the Cadillac of training."

The Submarine Learning Center creates, coordinates and executes the future training and education vision for the Submarine Force. It is responsible for all undersea curriculum and training delivery methodologies, and for developing and maintaining professional development continuum for all undersea warfare officers and ratings, to include electronics technician (communications and navigation), fire control technician, sonar technician, machinist's mate (auxiliary and weapons), missile technician, and all nuclear training ratings.
