Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego took second place overall in the fourth-annual Naval Base San Diego Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Cup competition, April 13.
Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego took second place overall in the fourth-annual Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Cup competition, April 13.

The SAPR Cup competition is held on NBSD every April during Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. This year's theme is "Embrace Your Voice."

"The SAPR Cup competition is a great way to raise awareness of sexual assault and the services we can provide to victims," said Moniece Montoya, TSC San Diego's Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC). "The event increases a team dynamic in raising awareness and we find that people tend to learn better in an interactive team-building environment."

SARCs from NBSD offered advice on options available to victims and discussed the role that all Sailors have in helping one another.

Afloat and ashore commands from the San Diego region competed in 12 events at the NBSD Admiral Prout multi-purpose field, including a cadence competition, five running events, tug-of-war, sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, tire flips, and SAPR trivia.

"Sports and team competitions are great ways to build trust and camaraderie within our command," said Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Equipment) Leguan D. Penigo, TSC San Diego's training department (N7) leading chief petty officer. "The teamwork that we foster here today will definitely promote a culture of respect and open communication in the workplace."

Aside from raising awareness, the SAPR Cup is also used to signify the Navy's constant support and dedication to victims of sexual assault.

"We may never understand how hard it is to be a victim, but we can always help them," said Capt. Roy Love, NBSD commanding officer. "Do that extra push-up, push the tire harder, run faster. Give as much as you can to support that victim."
