The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) held a command car and motorcycle show at Naval Air Station North Island, Aug. 31.

Carl Vinson's safety department organized the car show to raise traffic safety awareness.

"We're about to go into a long Labor Day weekend and we've already had a few incidents since we've been back from deployment," said Cmdr. Clifton Gibson, safety officer of Carl Vinson. "So safety department came up with the idea for this little motorcycle and car show to get people out here and have them display their rides that they're so proud of."

The show gave Carl Vinson Sailors a chance to show off their rides while providing a platform to educate them on traffic safety.

"We've had a great turnout," said Gibson. "We had the California Highway Patrol and Coronado Police Department here to talk about new traffic laws. We also have MADD [Mothers Against Drunk Driving] and MAAC [Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee], which runs a class for people who get DUIs. She spoke about her class and the consequences of drunk driving. It's important for Sailors to be educated on these matters."

Sailors also had the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities and games while looking through the variety of vehicles on display.

"The car show had a relaxing vibe," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) Airman Scott Emsley, a car show participant. "It was an informative experience and I enjoyed talking to the Coronado Police. I'm glad that the ship held the car show and I hope they do it again."

Carl Vinson is currently undergoing Carrier Incremental Availability in its homeport of San Diego.
