GHWB Holds Easter Services

Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) celebrated the Easter holiday with a series of worship services, April 16.

Easter services began with a sunrise service, which was sponsored by the Command Religious Ministries Department (CRMD) on the flight deck. The service featured scripture readings, hymns and sermons by GHWB and guest chaplains.

While it can be difficult for Sailors to be separated from their families and friends, many of those present during the services expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate the holiday in some capacity.

"It's really hard to be away from my family for a long time," said Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Luis Valentin. "Celebrating Easter with my shipmates makes it easier because it eases my spirit and mind, and I stand with Sailors in solidarity."

Services were also held in the chapel throughout the day for several religious denominations, including Protestant services, a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints service, and Roman Catholic Mass.

"It's one of our rights as Americans to be able to practice our faith, and the military does a good job of making sure that Sailors have the opportunity to do just that," said Cmdr. Christopher Fronk, a Navy chaplain visiting GHWB. "There are all kinds of events and services that happen to celebrate Easter and we were able to accommodate all of it."

For Fronk, providing the Easter services for the command was an endeavor that CRMD was happy to take on.

"CRMD exists for the Sailors, especially on a cherished day that is Easter," said Fronk. "We serve the crew, and that is a hallmark we should always strive for."
