Sailors from Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Corry Station relived history alongside U.S. Naval Sea Cadets and veterans aboard the former USS Alabama (BB 60) at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Alabama, April 22.

The event centered on a reunion to honor World War II veterans who served aboard the battleship. Dressed up in World War II-era uniforms, the IWTC Corry Station volunteers worked with teenagers from the Independence Squadron of the Sea Cadets from Pensacola, Florida, to participate in a reenactment of life aboard a battleship with the park's living history group.

"I used to be a Sea Cadet, and I just wanted to give back to these young men and women," said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 3rd Class Daniel Hedler, an IWTC Corry Station student.

The experience gave the cadets, the opportunity to study a part of naval history with Sailors who experienced it and show other visitors to the park what life was like aboard ship by performing every day activities.

"Our cadets learned a lot from these Sailors, and it's a privilege to have their mentorship," said Capt. Curtis Duncan, who serves as director for nuclear programs for officer development at Naval Service Training Command and volunteers as the executive officer of Independence Squadron. "The stories they shared and the guidance they provide really makes a difference for these kids."

The event culminated with general quarters and a simulated battle as participants took their assigned positions on different weapons systems and prepared to defend the ship. The Sailors and veterans also walked the cadets through basic damage control measures such as firefighting and first aid.

"Volunteering with the veterans of the USS Alabama, the Living History Crew, and the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets for this reenactment was truly a unique, overwhelming and humbling experience," said Information Systems Technician 1st Class Justin Sullivan, an instructor at IWTC Corry Station.

IWTC Corry Station, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare (IW) across the full spectrum of military operations.
