A significant amount of JP-5 jet fuel leaked from a tank at the Naval Air Station Oceana Bulk Fuel Farm last night. The spill was discovered and contained on base at 6:30 this morning. An undetermined amount of fuel also spilled outside the perimeter of the base into a ditch adjacent to the air station. A portion of London Bridge Boulevard has been closed to allow Navy and City of Virginia Beach responders to clean up the spill. The Navy, U. S. Coast Guard and the City are working together to determine the amount, extent and needed cleanup of any fuel that may have reached area waterways. The clean-up is expected to be completed within 48 hours. No injuries have been reported and flight operations at the installation have not been impacted. The cause of the spill is under investigation.
