After months of preparation and practice, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) performed extremely well in the Maintenance Material Management Inspection (3MI), July 28-30.

Highly qualified inspectors meticulously examined the ship and departmental records to ensure the crew was keeping their equipment within strict guidelines.

Ike Sailors demonstrated their proficiency in effective material readiness by completing spot checks on damage control gear and other shipboard equipment.

"As nerve-racking as it is to be inspected, I was actually pretty confident going into 3MI," said Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class Steven Gilmore. "I had done the maintenance a hundred times before and all I had to do was prove that I knew what I was doing."

During the visit, 250 planned maintenance system (PMS) spot checks were completed across 20 departments by the aircraft carrier type commander (TYCOM) 3M inspection team.

"An effective maintenance and material management (3M) program has helped Ike sustain mission readiness for the last forty years." said Lt. Craig Jacobson, Ike's 3M officer. "Without 3M, Ike wouldn't be in the excellent condition she is today. We can accredit our success during 3MI and the condition of the ship to the Sailors that keep her afloat. We set the bar high and challenge them to succeed, and time and time again, they rise to the occasion. This was no exception."

Executive Officer Capt. Craig C. Sicola was extremely proud of the crew's accomplishments. As the ships 3M system manager, he is responsible for the overall management of the 3M program aboard Ike.

"Ike's crew has really come together as a team to train and prepare for the 3M Inspection," said Sicola. "We continue to ensure the maintenance is being conducted properly and the ship is upholding the highest standards of procedural compliance. This is another example of how Ike becomes 'Greater Each Day!'"

It takes thousands of Sailors with hundreds of skill sets to run and operate one of the most powerful warships in the world. While every crew member aboard Ike is responsible for a different subject matter, it takes the combined effort of the entire ship to maintain a seaworthy vessel.

"I am incredibly proud of the work that the crew completes each [and] every day maintaining Ike," said Capt. Paul C. Spedero Jr., commanding officer of USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. "I was pleased to see that their hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed, as evident in their exceptional performance on the 3M inspection."

Ike is underway during the maintenance phase of the Optimized Fleet Response Plan (OFRP).
