Cmdr. Harold Bowman-Trayford relieved Cmdr. Marc Davis as commanding officer of the guided-missile destroyer USS Mahan (DDG 72) during a change of command ceremony aboard the ship, July 28.

During the ceremony, Davis spoke of his experiences while at the Mahan helm, and to the pride he has in his crew who helped build on the ship's reputation as one of the "workhorses" of the Atlantic fleet.

"I have watched Sailors, chiefs and officers grow into leaders and mentors," said Davis. "I have watched them grow into tactical experts capable of employing the awesome ordnance this warship carries with precision and speed unmatched in the fleet. You handled equipment casualties like seasoned professionals, troubleshooting and repairing with minimal down-time. You continue to impress me with your drive, motivation and tactical capability."

Davis will next report to Naval Surface and Mine Warfare Development Center, Dahlgren.

Bowman-Trayford assumes command after serving as executive officer. He praised his predecessor's legacy and also the privilege of assuming command of the Mahan.

"United States Sailors, and you in particular, are the greatest examples of honor, courage and commitment our nation has to offer," Bowman-Trayford said. "I am honored to have the opportunity to lead such a fine team."
