Reserve Sailors attached to Navy Operational Support Center Atlanta toured the facilities of the local Fox news affiliate Aug. 5, forming new relationships and learning how civilians gather and report the news.

WAGA-TV/Fox 5 weekend anchor Doug Evans volunteered to give the tour to members of Navy Office of Information U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet because of what he called "that Navy connection."

Evans' daughter, Lt. j.g. Caroline Evans, is a Naval Academy graduate serving aboard the destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) in the 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

At their first stop on the 10-acre campus, the Sailors met Eric Len, a Fox 5 photojournalist who talked what he finds most rewarding about his job: the people he meets.

"On a single day, I will be with a senator in the morning and homeless person at night," Len said.

In the newsroom, reporter Natalie Fultz was editing a video for the nightly broadcast. For the 10 p.m. broadcast, the video would look one way, she said; for the 11 p.m. broadcast, she would change it.

"It is presented differently," Fultz said. "The facts are the same, but the highlights are different."

The Sailors were introduced to the station's social media producer, Ben Bolton, who responsible for updating the Fox 5 website as well as its presence on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

"Social media work is not an exact science," Bolton said. "It is ever changing, but it is storytelling just the same."

During the tour, Evans showed off the station's collection of drones, which supplement its use of news helicopters.

His co-anchor, Deidra Dukes, meteorologist Jeff Hill and other members of the Fox 5 team also met with the Sailors.

The training and education officer of NAVINFO NAVEUR-NAVAF/6th Fleet, Lt. Gregory Grevelding, coordinated the tour and said he was thrilled when Evans said he could support it.

"I felt that Doug and the Fox 5 team went above and beyond," Grevelding said. "It was a tremendous experience for our unit members."
