The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) departed Theoule-Sur-Mer, France, Aug. 16, following a scheduled port visit where Sailors participated in events commemorating the liberation of southern France by allied forces during World War II.

Port visits such as these not only serve to commemorate our combined heritage and the defeat of tyranny in Europe, but also enhance U.S.-France relations as the two nations work together for a stable, secure, and prosperous region.

The ship's presence in the Mediterranean Sea is a demonstration of our continued commitment to the collective security of the European region.

Quote:
"Oscar Austin's crew had the unique opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women who fought to liberate France from the occupying forces of Nazi Germany during World War II. Port visits such as this one, allow us to gain enhanced ties with our allied partners and allow our crew to experience the rich history of France."
- Cmdr. Janice G. Smith, commanding officer, USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79)
