UNDERSECNAV Visits USS Philippine Sea

Guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) welcomed Under Secretary of the Navy Dr. Janine Davidson aboard for an overnight visit, Sept. 21.

During her time aboard, Davidson observed scenarios in the combat information center, toured engineering spaces, watched a Tomahawk missile exercise and observed a MK 15 Phalanx Close-In Weapon System and MK 45 5-inch lightweight gun shoot.

The purpose of Davidson's visit was to build a deeper understanding of the unique role cruisers play in the strike group as the air defense commander's flagship, and to understand the specific material challenges identified during cruiser modernization.

Davidson believes cruiser modernization is a necessity.

"Nobody is as forward-leaning as the United States Navy," said Davidson. "It is what makes us powerful and it is what makes us able to keep people safe."

Philippine Sea's Weapons Officer, Lt. Eric Smitley, believes Davidson's visit was a great opportunity to show her the inherent advantages cruisers have for the air defense mission and the potential material effect of cruiser modernization.

Davidson remarked several times how amazed she was with the capabilities of Philippine Sea and her crew.

"The best part of my job is coming here and meeting the Sailors who get stuff done," said Davidson.

"I couldn't be more proud of the professional manner in which my Sailors execute the mission every day, and they showed that to the under secretary during her visit," said Commanding Officer Capt. John Schmidt.

Philippine Sea is conducting routine training and operations in preparation for an upcoming deployment with the George H.W. Bush Strike Group.
