Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville and Naval Station (NS) Mayport, Fla., as well as Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga., are still closed. Only mission essential personnel and first responders are on board the bases.

Initial damage assessments of the impact of Hurricane Matthew will be conducted this morning.

Personnel and families who evacuated the area, or sheltered in their homes or shelters, should remain there until the "all clear" is given.

Now that the storm has passed, it's important to think about personal safety. The most dangerous time is always after the storm. It's recommended that personnel and families follow these tips:
* Ensure you muster with your chain of command; report your status and let them know if you or your family has immediate needs.

* If evacuated, do not attempt to return home until local authorities provide the "all clear."

* If sheltered in place, remain where you are as long as you are safe and secure. If cut off, first responders will get to you but it may take time.

* Do not walk in or drive through flood waters.

* Check food and water for contamination. If in doubt, throw it out.

* Examine the outside of buildings before entering; look for obvious signs of damage such as structural damage, downed power lines, broken glass, etc. If in doubt about the safety of the building, do not enter it.

* Do not use plumbing, sewage, or water lines if they are damaged.

* If you encounter live electrical wires, smell natural gas or propane, or hear a hissing noise, immediately depart the area and call 911.

* If your home flooded, it might be contaminated with hazardous mold or dangerous chemicals.

* Wear protective clothing and be very cautious when performing cleanup.

* Do not use generators, camp stoves, or grills inside. Only operate them outside and in a well-ventilated area.

* Be wary of mosquitoes; wear protective clothing, use mosquito repellent, and eliminate pools of standing water near your home. Repair screens if leaving windows open to ventilate and dry out your home.
