Guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) arrived in Mazatlan, Mexico, for a scheduled port visit, April 12.

While in port, the crew enjoyed the Mazatlan's local culture and hospitality and participated in several community outreach events, such as clearing brush and landscaping at the local orphanage "Cuidad de Los Niños" and began renovations at "Jovenes Mazatlan," a newly established rehabilitation center for young women.

The ship also hosted government and military officials, including the mayor of Mazatlan and Vicealmirante Francisco Limas Lopez, Comandante de la Cuarta Zona Naval, during a reception on board.

"This has been a highly anticipated and well-deserved port visit for the entire crew," said Cmdr. Adam Fleming, commanding officer of Wayne E. Meyer. "Mazatlan is a beautiful and truly hospitable city, and we greatly appreciate the overwhelmingly warm welcome."

Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Sabrina Prince from Owenton, Kentucky, said she was happy to volunteer during her off time.

"The community outreach projects were an incredibly humbling experience. It was a great opportunity to be able to help the local community," Prince said.
