PUGETSOUND, Wash. - The Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs), the Hon. Franklin Parker, met with the Sailors of the Ohio-class guided-middle submarine, USS Michigan (SSGN 727)(Blue), during a visit to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on Aug. 3.

His tour included Sailors showcasing the capabilities of the submarine which included a stop through the engineering spaces and the missile compartment with lockout chambers designed for embarking and deploying special operations forces.

Also highlighted on the tour were the modifications made to the submarine berthing spaces and washroom areas designed to incorporate the enlisted women on submarines; some of whom he met along the way to include Chief Culinary Specialist Dominique Saavedra, who recently earned her submarine qualification.

"The Navy is dedicated to removing barriers and opening jobs to all qualified individuals," said Parker. "I hope Chief Saavedra's accomplishment serves as an example to a new generation of enlisted female submariners."

He also met with Sailors throughout the ship in the battle management center, missile control center, and the control room, the operational center of the submarine.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to talk with the Sailors who serve on board USS Michigan," said Parker. The crew was welcoming, knowledgeable, and is dedicated to a vital piece of the Navy's mission. More than anything, I wanted to personally thank them for their sacrifice and acknowledge what they mean to our Navy team."

"It was an honor and a pleasure to introduce the crew and ship to Secretary Parker. Our Sailors worked extremely hard for the past year to return Michigan to sea," said Capt. Joe Turk, commanding officer of Michigan Blue. "The Assistant Secretary's recognition of their efforts demonstrates the SSGN's importance in our nation's security."
