Truman Receives Retention Excellence Award

14 January 2016
Aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) received the Chief of Naval Operation's (CNO) Retention Excellence Award for fiscal year 2015.
Aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) received the Chief of Naval Operation's (CNO) Retention Excellence Award for fiscal year 2015.

Truman, along with USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77), Precommissioning Unit Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and several other ships, staffs and squadrons, met CNO requirements for reenlistment in all zones.

The award represents the command's high retention percentage among its crew as it continues to develop itself for effectiveness across the full range of military operations.

"I believe this award shows the passion and drive that each and every Sailor has to the command and to the team," said Chief Navy Counselor J. Osborne, one of Truman's command career counselors. "It represents the dedication and hard work the entire command has put forth. A team effort and 'Give 'Em Hell' concept."

The command earned a score of 96 percent on the annual Career Information Program Review, which is made up of the majority of the Brilliant on the Basics programs, sponsorship, indoctrination, career development boards,
mentorship, ombudsman program, and Sailor recognition.

Other benchmarks helped the command earn the REA by meeting the required number of reenlistments for three zones of service.

The requirements were: more than 40 percent for Zone A Sailors with zero to six years of service, more than 50 percent for Zone B Sailors with six to 10 years of service, and more than 63 percent for Zone C Sailors with 10 to 14 years of service.

"This is a direct reflection of an effective program comprised of a coordinated effort from both the career development team and chain of command to take care of Sailors and their families," said Logisitcs Specialist
2nd Class C. Everett, Supply Department's career counselor.

Truman is now authorized to fly the REA pennant, a gold banner emblazoned with a blue fouled anchor and paint its anchors gold, which it did during its latest port visit to Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates.

"The gold anchors are a visual reminder of the hard work and dedication of our Sailors throughout the ranks and across the board in order to earn such recognition as a large command," said Electrician's Mate (Nuclear)
1st Class S. Bolt, Reactor Department's career counselor.

Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group is deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, maritime security operations, and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
