Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI) held a change of command ceremony, Feb. 19.

Capt. Geoffrey Moore relieved Capt. Mike Nortier, who also retired during the ceremony following 26 years of naval service.

"The fact that there are so many in the crowd really speaks to the value of Team Whidbey," said Nortier. "Despite the weather and typical winter conditions of Whidbey Island, it truly represents the value that Whidbey Island has."

Rear Adm. Jeffrey Ruth, commander of Navy Region Northwest and guest speaker, spoke of the talents that Nortier demonstrated during his tenure as commanding officer.

"Capt. Nortier's keen insight, his honesty, straight talk, and ability to see and articulate what truly matters will be missed," said Ruth.

Ruth took the opportunity during his speech to personally thank Nortier for all he accomplished at NASWI.

"Nort, your accomplishments over the last three years have been impressive and, truth be told, a little humbling," said Ruth. "The level of effort and sheer number of issues and projects you have tackled with apparent ease are astounding."

Ruth went on to welcome Moore and express his confidence in Moore's capability to lead Team Whidbey into the future.

"Geoff, welcome to the Region Northwest team," said Ruth. "I know that your time at Whidbey Island and the close relationship with the community that you will build will offer some of the most rewarding experiences of your career. I am confident in your ability to carry out the mission of this critical command and build on the tremendous foundation provided by Nort."

Moore expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead NASWI.

"It is truly an honor and privilege to stand here as the 39th commanding officer of NAS Whidbey Island, to continue the great work that Team Whidbey does every day to support the fleet, fighter and family members assigned here," said Moore. "The impressive assembly of talented individuals in front of me is awe-inspiring, and the combined synergy of military, community, state, and national leaders is absolutely incredible and effectively captures the essence of our concept of Team Whidbey."

Moore spoke of the core mission of Team Whidbey.

"Together we will continue the vision of one team, one family focused on one single and immensely important mission; to be ready to answer the call of our civilian leadership to fight and win our nation's wars," said Moore.
