Oceanographer of the Navy Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet, presented Rear Adm. (ret.) Jon White, former oceanographer of the Navy with a plaque commemorating the naming of an underwater seamount during a ceremony held at the U.S. Naval Observatory, March 4.

The undersea mountain named "White Seamount" is located in the Northern Pacific Ocean, about 600 miles west of Washington State. The feature's height is 3,523 feet and begins at a depth of 13,700 feet.

"We're here to recognize our former specialty leader in the Information Warfare community, friend and stalwart champion for Naval Oceanography," said Gallaudet during the ceremony. "Under his leadership, the Navy made tremendous advances in oceanography, navigation, maritime domain awareness, and Arctic policy via the Arctic Roadmap. The honor of having a seamount named after him is most appropriate."

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is responsible for the naming and approval of underwater sea features.

Naval Oceanography encompasses a wide range of missions crucial to supporting today's Naval fleet and Information Warfare Community. They include oceanography, hydrography, meteorology, climate science, geospatial information science, astrometry, Earth orientation and precise time.
