Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets from Rickover Naval Academy welcomed three admirals to their unit on Oct. 9.

Commander, Naval Service Training Command, Rear Adm. Stephen C. Evans, who was making his first unit visit since taking over at NSTC, hosted Vice Adm. Ted Carter, superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy and Rear Adm. Michael A. Alfultis, president of the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College.

Each admiral was welcomed by the staff and cadets of Rickover, and toured the facilities and had the chance to speak with many of the cadets. During the course of their visit, cadets provided the admirals with a unit brief discussing unit structure and some unit highlights, including their goals for the year.

"I was very impressed on my first visit to a NJROTC unit," said Evans. "The cadets represented the program well today and it was an honor to speak with them about my experiences in the Navy and about some of the opportunities they might have in the future."

Rickover Naval Academy is a Chicago Public Schools (CPS) high school where all the students are Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets. It is one of six military academies in Chicago. The school is named after Adm. Hyman G. Rickover who was a 1917 graduate of the CPS and 1920 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He is known as the "Father of the Nuclear Navy."

NJROTC is a citizenship development program, established in 1964, that instills service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment in students in secondary educational institutions. Today, there are more than 600 units at high schools and military academies across the United States including units in Japan and Guam.

Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), headquartered at Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill., oversees the NJROTC program and 98 percent of all initial accessions training for the Navy, except the officers produced by the U. S. Naval Academy. This includes the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program with more than 60 units at colleges and universities across the country, Officer Training Command (OTC) in Newport, R.I., and Recruit Training Command (RTC) at Great Lakes, Ill.
