The Commander, Navy Region Southwest (CNRSW) Diversity Team celebrated its annual Hispanic Heritage Month, Oct. 14.

With this year's theme being "Energizing our Nation's Diversity", Sailors and civilians of CNRSW gathered to hear Isabel Cruz, a successful and self-taught chef and restaurateur, provide her perspective as a Hispanic business owner.

"I never thought that coming from where I came from I would be able to support my two kids on my own," said Cruz. "I'm so proud that I was not only able to support them, but also pay for all of their college myself."

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Cruz first entered the service industry as a waitress. When she came across a restaurant for sale, she decided to start the "Mission Cafe" using small loans from family and friends. She is now the owner of four successful restaurants in the San Diego area, one in Oregon and a cookbook author.

"The satisfaction that you get from working hard and making something out of your life and for your family is so rewarding," said Cruz.

A presentation of seven different Hispanic countries followed her story, showcasing cultural key points and food. Sailors and civilians broke open two Mexican piñatas.

Fran Malone, a member of the Diversity Team, reflected on how Hispanics are recognized more in today's society.

"I think Hispanics stand a little taller nowadays than they used to," said Malone. "People reflect on others who have been able to achieve great things. It shows we can go further, that we can do a whole lot more than we thought. Nothing should stop anybody from achieving what they want."

CNRSW's Diversity Team coordinated the event to honor the great contributions Hispanics have made and continue to make to both U.S. history and to the U.S. Navy. Sailors and their commands are encouraged to use this month to celebrate and recognize the exceptional and distinctive contributions and the unique histories and cultures that Sailors of Hispanic descent bring to the Navy.
