Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego held a birthday celebration to mark the Navy's 240th birthday aboard Naval Base San Diego Oct. 9.

"Today we honor the multitude of men and women who have chosen to proudly wear the Navy uniform, active or reserve, as well as civilians during times of war and during times of peace," said Capt. John D. Wilshusen, commanding officer of TSC San Diego.

At 9 a.m., the ceremonial eight bells rang to signify the end of the current birthday year and were followed by a ceremonial strike of one bell to signify the start of the new birthday year.

Following tradition, the oldest and youngest Sailor cut the first slice in the Navy's birthday cake.

"For the younger generations, the Navy traditions continue to remind them of why we joined and why we continue to serve," said Gunner's Mate Seaman Erik Early, the youngest Sailor at the commemoration. "The Navy is rich in history."

According to Wilshusen, the Navy is continuing a tradition of excellence as a maritime force.

"For 240 years, we have been ready to answer the call when it mattered, where it mattered, around the world, and around the clock," said Wilshusen.
