USS Emory S. Land Celebrates Navy Birthday

22 October 2015
Sailors assigned to submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) celebrated the U.S. Navy's 240th birthday with a cake-cutting ceremony on the ship's mess decks.
The celebration consisted of speakers who shared thoughts on this year's birthday theme of "Ready Then, Ready Now, Ready Always," a rendition of the happy birthday song, a benediction from the Chaplain, and the cake cutting.

Senior Sailors in attendance, both enlisted and officers, reflected on their time and experiences in the Navy and shared some memories with the audience.

"The celebration is an important reminder of the rich history of our Navy and of those who have gone before us and all that they accomplished," said Lt.j.g. Brendan Henning, postal officer for Emory S. Land. "At the same time, it's about looking forward to make sure we are prepared for the new challenges looming on the horizon."

"I was very impressed with the celebration, it made me reflect on my reasoning why I first joined the Navy," said Hospitalman Danika Mammenga. "I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself. The Navy has provided great opportunities for me in my two years. I am very much thankful for that."

Emory S. Land is a forward deployed expeditionary submarine tender on an extended deployment conducting coordinated tended moorings and afloat maintenance in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.
