Rear Adm. James Loeblein, commander, Task Force Individual Augmentee, relieved the commanding officer of the Multinational Medical Unit at Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan, on March 31, 2015, due to loss of confidence in her ability to command following an initial investigation which revealed evidence of a toxic and abusive command climate in the unit. In addition Rear Adm. Loeblein also relieved the medical unit's command master chief, for his role in fostering the hostile command climate. Capt. Maria K. Majar and Master Chief Petty Officer Shane R. Reece were reassigned to administrative duties with Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (Forward), located at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, pending the final outcome of the investigation. Capt. William Leonard, previously scheduled to take command of the medical unit in April, has assumed duties as commanding officer. Senior Chief Petty Officer James Fyfe, previously scheduled to take over in April as the Command Senior Chief, has assumed that position. The Multinational Medical Unit is the primary trauma receiving and referral center for all combat casualties in Southern Afghanistan, and is manned largely by individual augmentee personnel. Task Force Individual Augmentee supports Navy individual augmentee personnel deployed throughout the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
