Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center's (MARMC) Production Department hosted an intern from the Amphibious Warfare Program Office for Naval Acquisition in Norfolk, Virginia, on April 14.

The intern, Mohamed A. Ali, is a mechanical engineer and visited MARMC as part of an external internship through his program office in Washington, D.C.

"Mohamed got the opportunity to see first-hand the day-to-day operation of MARMC Production Department executing ship maintenance here on the waterfront. We enjoyed having him," said MARMC Production Manager Derrick Mitchell.

According to Mitchell, these types of visits help interns understand the big picture of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), and how ship maintenance and repair work is contracted, executed, and delivered.

During Ali's visit, he attended various meetings within the production department, along with multiple tours of MARMC's production shops, and learned how MARMC's production department executes ships' work packages. He also traveled to BAE Systems with the waterfront operations team.

"This was a great opportunity for me to see how the people in production handle repair work," said Ali. "Using the knowledge that I have picked up from interning with other programs regarding the contracting of ship work, I really wanted to see how the other side works".

After learning how contracts are awarded, and the oversight process that goes into enforcing those contracts, Ali said he now has a better understanding of how production fits into the execution phase.

"As a mechanical engineer, I primarily focus on engines, or maybe to get the right feature for mounting an engine. As an acquisition mechanical engineer, my focus is not only on design, but contracting, awarding of that contract, and ensuring that the ship is built in a manner that is beneficial to the Navy," said Ali.
