The Medical Service Corps (MSC) leadership held their annual Career Development Symposium at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP), Aug. 14, focusing on promotion, retention and professional growth.

Speakers included the community manager, detailers and the chief of the Medical Service Corps, Rear Adm. Terry Moulton.

"Every year, we have a professional development session, which is an opportunity for the MSC officers throughout Tidewater and the Mid-Atlantic region to come together and give presentations on the current status of operation forces, promotion boards and the current status on what's trending for promotion opportunities," said Cmdr. Matthew Case, NMCP's director for administration.

Case gave opening remarks and shared facts, photos and other information about the 31 specialties that make up the corps, before turning the floor over to Moulton, who is also the commander for Navy Medicine East.

Moulton kicked off his remarks with a hearty "Go Navy!" chant, exciting the officers about the opportunity of the day ahead. The admiral went on to give an update on the initiatives within Navy Medicine and the effects they will have on the corps. He also presented information to guide junior officers with their career development.

The remainder of the day was filled with a variety of presentations on MSC career progression.

"We were very fortunate to have the admiral here to be our guest speaker," Case said. "We had great briefs and participation from the fleet. We had detailers and the community manager. Then having officers from the mid-Atlantic region was very nice; to have the chance to network. We owe it to ourselves as leaders to make sure we are helping to develop junior officers to be successful."
