Sailors from Navy Operational Support Center, Ventura County traveled to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library to participate in the reenlistment ceremony of YNC(AW/EXW) Vanessa Gutierrez Feb. 12 in Simi Valley, California. Gutierrez was joined by family, friends and shipmates as she reenlisted for four more years of active duty service. A reenlistment ceremony is a time honored tradition in every branch of the U.S. military. It serves as a visible, public celebration for enlisted service members where they reaffirm the Oath of Enlistment and continue their commitment to serving our nation. Gutierrez joined the U.S. Navy Aug. 16, 2000, the same day as her Grandfather's and father's birthday, from her home town in Los Angeles. Fifteen years later she still believes it was the best professional decision she has made. Her assignments include Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 56 (Globemasters), Norfolk, Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC), North Island, Coronado, SEAL Team 17, San Diego and NOSC, Ventura County. "It's an honor to continue to serve our country and Navy. I am truly appreciative of my family and shipmates for joining me today in this ceremony" said Gutierrez. "I come from a family that honors service." Her Grandfather and father both served in the Army, and her cousin, Maj. Ruben Gutierrez, served as the reenlisting officer. Maj. Gutierrez was excited to serve as his cousin's reenlisting officer. Having shared in many significant milestones over the years, he was honored to swear the chief in for four more years of service. "It's always an honor, privilege and pleasure to reenlist our finest who continue to volunteer and swear an oath to defend this great country of ours" said Maj. Gutierrez, who is currently serving as the Inspector Instructor (I&I) for Golf Company, 2nd Bn, 23rd Marines. "It's even more special when the person you are reenlisting is your cousin." Navy Operational Support Center Command Master Chief Thomas Lintz was present at the ceremony and noted, "Chief Gutierrez is a leader at work, at home and in our community. She's made a lasting impact on hundreds, if not thousands of Sailors and truly represents selfless service. Her direct leadership has contributed to the success of our Command and Navy. Chief Petty Officers like her embody the true essence of senior enlisted leadership." Conducting the ceremony at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library was fitting. The impact President Reagan had on our Navy and Country made history.
