The Center for Security Forces (CENSECFOR) Detachment Pearl Harbor staff opened their doors and hearts, March 9-13, in an all-out volunteer effort to support those competing in the 2015 Wounded Warrior Pacific Trials.

The trials were hosted by Commander, Navy Region Hawaii and by Navy Wounded Warrior - Safe Harbor. The event featured 60 athletic Navy and Coast Guard personnel from all parts of the country.

"What a great privilege to be a part of this event, as it demonstrates that those who serve are not forgotten. My staff and I were excited when asked if we could host this at our training site," said Lt. Cmdr. Jason Schmidt, CENSECFOR Detachment Pearl Harbor officer-in-charge.

Coaches and athletes, as well as family and friends, assembled on the historic Ford Island in Pearl Harbor where they competed in various sporting events. Among the events were cycling, archery, shooting, volleyball, swimming and basketball.

Two of the competing athletes, retired Chief Gunner's Mate Hector Varela and retired Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Robert Westfall, were sponsored by the detachment. Athlete sponsors ensured each athlete had everything he or she needed in order to have a positive and rewarding experience.

Hangar 54 and the surrounding area was the focal point for the cycling, archery and shooting events. The hangar itself was widely used supporting not only a nutrition and information station sponsored by the USO, but also a medical station for first aid and/or to treat heat related injuries. It also served as safe storage for an array of bikes, wheelchairs, bows and various other pieces of athletic gear.

The hanger was also the location for the archery event featuring the compound bow. The event took place inside the indoor firing range used to train security force personnel. The range, a 25-yard range constructed primarily of large shipping containers, featured six firing lanes for the archery event.

The detachment also provided much-needed volunteers who assisted with setting up for the various events. During the cycling trials, staff members and other local volunteers, ensured the event course was ready to go and that safety personnel were in place.

Of the 60 athletes who competed, only 40 will advance to the Warrior Games scheduled in the upcoming months. These men and women will then compete against other athletes who have advanced within their respective branch of military service.

The Center for Security Forces provides specialized training to more than 28,000 students each year. It has 14 training locations across the United States and around the world where training breeds confidence.
