Acting ASN (EI&E) Todd Schafer Visits Navy Region Southeast and Marine Corps Support Facility Blount Island

25 June 2021
WASHINGTON – Acting Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment (EI&E) Todd Schafer traveled to Navy and Marine Corps installations from June 21-23.

Schafer visited Marine Corps Support Facility Blount Island on June 21. He met with base Commanding Officer Col. Michael Livingston to discuss proposed military construction (MILCON) projects. During this visit, Schafer toured the Lighterage Wharf and a site for a shoreline repair project. He also recognized one Marine and two civilians for their contributions to safety and to the command’s mission.

“These proposed infrastructure upgrades and the shoreline restoration plan ensures that the Department of the Navy can keep using Blount Island as a vital strategic hub for the Marine Corps’ prepositioning program,” said Schafer. “The pride that these Marines, Sailors, civilians and contractors have in their work is why our Fleet Marine Forces are equipped for every mission.”

Schafer visited Submarine Base Kings Bay on June 22 with Georgia Senator Sheila McNeill, City of St. Marys Mayor John Morrissey, Navy Region Southeast Commander Rear Adm. Wesley McCall and base Commanding Officer Capt. Chester Parks.

During this visit, Schafer met with Rear Adm. John Spencer, Commander, Submarine Group Ten and toured both the USS Tennessee (SSBN 734) and the Trident Refit Facility. He also visited several family housing sites and the Trident Training Facility to observe Sailors using state-of-the-art submarine simulators. Finally, Schafer recognized one Sailor and four civilians for their dedication to safety and quality of life programs.

“I am impressed by our Sailors who call Kings Bay both their place of work and their home,” said Schafer. “The quality and the continued maintenance and upkeep of this base’s facilities, piers and housing contribute directly to warfighting readiness.”

Schafer visited Naval Station Mayport on June 23. He met with Capt. Jason Canfield, the base Commanding Officer to discuss the installation’s MILCON priorities, infrastructure challenges and the impacts of sea level rise. Schafer also toured the wharves and turning basin, family housing and unaccompanied housing at Delbert D. Black Hall. Finally, Schafer presented safety awards to two Southeast Regional Maintenance Center civilians for their support to the Department of the Navy Gas Free Engineer Certification Board.

“While Naval Station Mayport continues to grow and serve more tenants, we need to get ahead of the challenges that come with sea level rise,” said Schafer. “The transparency in communication and coordination between the installation, Public Works Department, Housing Office, Safety, Environmental and Community Planning is crucial for ensuring our people and platforms get the services they need.”
