Statement by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson and Dr. Andrew Krepinevich, Chairman, CNO's Executive Panel on the Passing of Andrew W. Marshall.

Statement by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson and Dr. Andrew Krepinevich, Chairman, CNO's Executive Panel on the Passing of Andrew W. Marshall.

Andrew Marshall was an icon in every sense of the word. To understand Marshall's influence is to understand the cutting edge of strategic thinking in the United States since 1950. While much of his work was and remains classified, it is not an exaggeration to say that the fruits of his work include the successful resolution of the Cold War on peaceful terms, and preparing for the emerging competition with China. One can even more vividly see his influence in the people that he mentored-the alumni of "St. Andrew's Prep"-Marshall's proteges who have become leading strategic thinkers in their own right.

Andy Marshall was also a bright star during his many decades of service on the CNO's Executive Panel. The Navy is stronger because of his generous and thoughtful contributions.

The Navy and the Nation will miss Andy Marshall, but nobody will miss him more than his family and friends. On behalf of the entire Navy, we pray for their consolation and that Andrew Marshall, who quietly and powerfully helped secure generations of peace for all Americans, may himself now rest in peace.
