Before he was both the oldest and youngest Secretary of Defense in our Nation’s history, before his service in the White House, NATO, and Congress, Don Rumsfeld was a Naval Officer – a pilot and flight instructor who helped strengthen our mission during the twilight struggle of the cold war.
His continued service through the decades that followed, particularly his leadership of the Department of Defense at the close of the Vietnam War and the dawn of the Global War on Terror will long be remembered, as will his leadership following the events of September 11th, 2001. His legacy endures throughout our Joint Force, and wherever our personnel serve around the world.
