As a fellow New Yorker from a family of Caribbean immigrants who also served as an Officer in the United States Military as well as a White House Fellow, I have often drawn inspiration from Secretary Powell’s example. I have carried his lessons in leadership throughout my career, and I was honored to serve in uniform under his Chairmanship of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his leadership as Secretary of State in the years following the attacks on September 11th.

He was a man of outspoken integrity and unwavering commitment to our Nation and to all who serve under our flag. His voice will be missed, but his example and legacy will endure. I offer my deepest condolences to the entire Powell family on the passing of this great American.
