Members of NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Jacksonville (FLCJ) celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a round-table discussion and potluck celebration, Oct. 9, in Jacksonville, Fla.
Hispanic heritage celebrations first began in 1968 as a “Hispanic Heritage Week.” In 1988, President Ronald Reagan extended the week to a month-long observe of the contributions the Hispanic community has made and continues to make to our legacy of freedom, diversity and democracy.
The heritage month’s observance dates, from Sept. 15-Oct. 15, refer to Independence Day anniversaries of Latin American countries – Sept. 15 is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico declared its independence Sept. 16, and Chile Sept. 18.
FLCJ’s potluck celebration featured traditional foods from various Hispanic cultures, a cake-cutting and a presentation with commentary by Mr. Angel Sanchez, Deputy HAZMAT Director, NAVSUP FLCJ.
“I am honored to stand here today to celebrate the many Hispanic Americans that have made and continue to make our country so great,” said Sanchez. “Hispanic Americans have shaped our national character with a profound influence on our culture, our history, and our future though our commitment to hard work, family, and service.”
This year’s theme is “Hispanics: One Endless Voice to Enhance our Traditions.” The theme highlights the many Hispanic patriots who have fought for our nation’s security, made advances in sciences and arts, and continue to positively impact the history and future of our nation.
As of June 2018, approximately 59,000 active and Reserve Sailors of Hispanic heritage serve in the U.S. Navy contributing to the strength of the nation’s force. Hispanic Americans’ military service dates back to the Civil War.
